Queen Elizabeth National Park is located in kasese and is bounded to the west by Ishasha River and Lake Edward along the Congolese border, to the north by Kasese and the Rwenzori foothills, to the east by Lake George, the Kyambura Gorge and Kalinzu Forest Reserve, and to the south by the Kigezi Wildlife Reserve. The park is associated with open savanna, studded in some areas with a dense cover of acacia and euphorbia trees. It embraces large areas of swamp around lake George and at least ten crater lakes lie within the park including a highly accessible cluster immediately north of the main road to Mweya lodge.
There are 95 mammal species have been recorded in the park. Ten primate species are present including chimpanzee, vervet, blue, red-tailed and L’Hoest’s monkey, black-and-white colobus and olive baboon. Around 20 predators are found in the park, including side-striped jackal, spotted hyena, lion and leopard. Some 610 bird species have been recorded in Queen Elizabeth National Park, a truly remarkable figure for a reserve that is relatively small by continental standards.
Chimp tracking from kyambura Gorge is carried out in the park. The Maramagambo Forest and abutting forest reserves collectively protect one of the largest chimpanzee populations in East Africa. Guided chimp-tracking start in the morning daily from Fig Tree camp that lies on the rim of the gorge east of the Mbarara road and a maximum of eight permits is issued for each session. Three different guided forest walks are undertaken from the visitor’s center at Maramagambo. Bird watchers can use a likely to be the longer loop around the back of Lake Nyamasingiri which takes half a day to finish up. The most popular activity carried out at Mweya is the launch trip to the mouth of the Kazinga channel including game drives running parallel to the northern shore of the Kazinga channel between Mweya and katunguru. On top of the above, there is katwe and the explosion craters.
